5 Email Marketing Mistakes That Are Costing You Conversions

Our credibility to be writing this blog? We just received this Slack from a client, "Just wanted to say that we're ecstatic with the first edition of [the newsletter]. We were not even expecting any sales from our first edition, but we made over $800 in sales! We see so much potential with our newsletter (and our email strategy in general!) and are so excited to continue this momentum with you."

So, yes. We are the email experts, and we have to share some of our top email advice for you. Especially since there are so many companies starting to go the AI route, and it shows. Not only in the text, but in the results, too. AI can be helpful for so many things, like breaking down your email insights...but your email strategy and content? Now, that's where it needs to be humans-only.

Here are the top mistakes we see with email marketing and how to correct them.

Email Subject Lines

If your subject doesn’t grab attention, the rest of the email doesn’t matter. If you are using long, clickbait-y subject lines, that's where you run into low open rates. Instead, test subject lines that are short, catchy, and relevant to the content inside the email.

Emailing without segmentation

Sending the same message to your entire list misses major opportunities! Segmenting your email list can allow businesses to tailor email marketing to specific personalities and avatars within their audience. The last thing we ever want is for our marketing to not feel personal and resonate directly with the person who is reading it, and that's where segmentation can help.

Overloading with text

Long blocks of text or overly busy layouts can overwhelm your readers. Your email should be a good balance of photos, graphics, and text to make it easy and fun to read! Think about the emails you continue reading, they likely aren't filled with paragraph after paragraph, right?

No clear call-to-action

If readers don’t know the next step, they won’t take it. If you want your viewers to click within your email, you need to direct them to do so. And, don't just give the classic "click here," make it creative and pull them in!

Ignoring Analytics

Simply put, ignoring your analytics makes your work pointless. If you don't know what's working, you don't know how to leverage the right content. Data-driven marketing is our bread and butter here at Social Savvy because skipping open rates, clicks, and unsubscribes means you’re flying blind.

In sum, ensure that you're listening to your analytics, have a clear call-to-action, curate your design and text intentionally, segment your list, and strategize your subject lines. All of these steps are important pieces to having an email strategy that connects and converts your audience.
